Following a major fire in 2023 that destroyed the greenkeeping facilities within the south west corner of the Grade 1 listed Fort Henry, Morris Architects was appointed to design and deliver a sensitive reconstruction within one of Jersey’s most significant defensive structures.

Fort Henry, a rare square plan 18th century fort later adapted during the German occupation and now used by the Royal Jersey Golf Club, suffered extensive heat damage to its inner granite walls, WWII concrete structures and original fireplaces. Working closely with heritage specialist structural engineer, we developed a scheme that reinstates essential operational buildings while protecting the architectural and archaeological value of the site.

The new single storey workshop and welfare buildings were constructed on the existing footings but deliberately set away from the historic walls, ensuring all additions remain visually subservient, reversible and clearly distinct from the original fort. Their low profile preserves the dominance of the historic granite walls, while a restrained palette of metal framing, composite cladding and timber effect boarding allows the new structures to sit quietly within the courtyard.

Completed in May 2025, the project restores vital facilities for the Royal Jersey Golf Club while safeguarding the heritage significance of one of Jersey’s most distinctive coastal forts. The works enhance long term resilience, improve day to day functionality for the greenkeeping team and ensure that all modern interventions remain respectful and legible against the historic fabric.
